Observations |
The arthropod was found in a grassy farm area with large trees near a small pool of water. It was collected in the morning, around 10 am, springtime, and it was around 71 degrees F outside. The arthropod has large red eyes, a tan abdomen, a black rear, wings, and is small in size. A picture of where the arthropod was collected and the trap around its natural habitat is attached. |

Protocol notes | DNA extraction: The arthropod was crushed really well. There was no need to extract the abdomen out as the arthropod was really small. The Negative (-) Arthropod Control did not show any bands in the 16S rRNA Wolbachia PCR Gel and the Water Control did not have bands at all, showing that all the controls worked. This indicates that the results of this experiment are valid and could be analyzed. |

Explanation of confidence level | As all of the controls in this experiment worked properly and there were no problems with the protocol as the steps were carried out correctly, it can be concluded that the results are credible. Looking at the Arthropod PCR Gel results, bands appeared for sample 4 (this bug) in well 4 indicating the Arthropod PCR worked properly as the controls worked correctly, however as there were no bands that appeared for the sample in the Wolbachia PCR in well 4 although the controls worked, it can be concluded that sample 4 is an arthropod, but does not contain Wolbachia. |
